Moscow, Russia — There have been wide spread reports that Russia is readying to test-fire a nuclear weapon that is so powerful it could wipe out an entire country in literally seconds.
Appropriately dubbed “Satan 2″, the nuclear missiles are said to be among the most powerful that have ever been created. Additionally, the missiles reportedly come with stealth technology that could make it capable of by-passing enemy radar systems.
This will likely make for grim reading for many Western military officials, as the doomsday weapon has the potential of mass destruction and there isn’t much that can be done to prevent an attack. The problem is that all current defense systems would be totally incapable of stopping the missile if launched.
Satan 2 does have an official name, with the missile system known as the RS-28 Sarmat. They have been developed as an upgrade for the current Soviet R-36M missiles, with the aging missiles having been originally nicknamed “Satan” by NATO military experts.
According to reports from Russian news network Zvezda:
“In this sense, the Sarmat missile will not only become the R-36M’s successor, but also to some extent it will determine in which direction nuclear deterrence in the world will develop,”
The news broadcaster would go on to explain that the missile system features a total of 12 nuclear warheads. As a result of such firepower, Satan 2 has the power to destroy massive areas of the world – its claimed it could destroy an area the size of France.
This all makes for understandably worrying news, although the likelihood of any attack would appear to be unlikely. However, given the sheer power of the weapon, it’s clear just how dangerous a proposition this could make Russia in the event of an attack.
The RS-28 Sarmat has a reported firing range of 10,000km and can deliver warheads of 40 megatons. Therefore, an attack launched from Russian capital Moscow could fire on and obliterate any major European city, such as London, Rome, or Berlin. Additionally, this firing range could see the missiles capable of hitting both the West and East coasts of the United States.
And just how powerful is a 40 megaton warhead?
That would be about 2,000 times more powerful than both the atom bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 during WW2. To get an idea how much damage this could potentially do your city, go to the NukeMap and select the Tsar Bomba which carries a 50 megaton warhead.
