Rudozem, Bulgaria — Despite their shelter being at full capacity, members of Rudozem Street Dog Rescue couldn’t turn away a poor abandoned dog that was close to death. The shelter was contacted after passers-by came across an abandoned dog whose health was in terrible condition.

The pup was found chained to a rusty trailer with no way of getting free. He had no food or water either, with the little guy relying on hand outs from any passing strangers. As if that wasn’t bad enough, the people that left him there warned others to leave him alone to die. They said he had a dangerous disease that they could potentially catch. His legs were deformed and he was suffering from a horrible cough — it’s clear he didn’t have long left to survive.

Thankfully, the guys at Rudozem Street Dog Rescue simply knew they had to rescue the unfortunate pup and nurse him back to health. He was immediately rushed back to the shelter for treatment, and he would spend a number of months there recovering.

His transformation is nothing short of remarkable. Take a look at the photos that show just how far he has come since he was rescued –- it’s a truly wonderful job done by everyone at Rudozem Street Dog Rescue!

1The poor dog was found like this. He was chained there for ten days and survived on scraps of bread and water from strangers. He had a bad limp — something was wrong with his front legs.

4Even though the shelter was at full capacity, his rescuers knew they couldn’t send him away. They kept him at the shelter and gave him a cage to stay in.

6After a quick examination, it became clear just how young he was. Duke was just 10 months old!

7Then it was time to take him to the vet for a full check-up. Everyone at the shelter wanted to know what was wrong with his legs.

8Vets realized his legs had nothing to do with genetics or malnutrition. Someone intentionally broke his legs when he was still very young. But Duke is a tough pup, so the vets wasted no time in setting the bones.

9As a result, Duke had to wear splints and undergo many operations to help correct the problem. Then it was time to wrap the legs in a cast.

10After wearing the casts for two weeks, they hoped that Duke’s tendons and legs would be close enough to their natural position before another operation.

17Feeling a little tired after yet another trip to the vet for quick surgery, which is totally understandable. He still needed more surgery on his legs but was slowly getting better every day.

18Then the best news ever came in…someone had applied to adopt Duke! His new family passed the vetting process with flying colors.
