Changsha, China — Waiting for more than one hour can be exhausting to many, imagine the plight of waiting for 10 days! This is what happened to the lovelorn Dutchman Alexander Pieter Cirk, 41, who traveled from Amsterdam to Changsha, China. He then waited at the airport for ten days for his online girlfriend. The woman, known only by her last name, Zhang, never showed up.
Cirk, who is a diabetic, paid a heavy price for the long wait as he was hospitalized for exhaustion. When the local media got in touch with the 26-year old Zhang, she expressed surprise, and said that she was under the impression that Cirk was joking when he said that he would come visit her in China. Even when he sent pictures of his plane tickets, she thought he was just making light of the situation.
When questioned further on why she had gone completely “missing” when Cirk landed at China after traveling 5,000 miles for her, she said that she had turned the phone off because she was undergoing cosmetic surgery procedures in another city in the country.
“We had advanced our romantic relationship but later he seemed a little callous towards me. One day he sent me a photo of air tickets abruptly, and I thought it was a joke. He didn’t contact me later.”
The story went viral on Chinease social media and the whole incident had netizens unsympathizing with Cirk’s plight. Many felt that Zhang’s aloofness was extremely insensitive and Cirk shouldn’t have waited that long while neglecting his already poor health. On the Chinese micro-blogging site Weibo, one commenter said:
“Doesn’t he know that everything in China is fake?”
After being discharged from the hospital on Monday, Cirk flew back to Holland. Zhang however, seems to be positive about meeting Cirk and says that the relationship is still very much alive. She said that she would love to meet Cirk once she is fully recovered. Looks like we are looking at a romantic sequel ahead!
