Queens, New York — In 2013, Karina Vetrano posted this ominous entry to her blog:
“Have you ever found solace in the thought of dying? Not in a suicidal way, it’s just…Sometimes when I’m feeling really sad & lonely and misunderstood I wonder, if right now, at this age & this time of my life if by some freak accident I died, what would happen?”
In 2016, this striking young woman was found dead in the marshy outskirts of her neighborhood after leaving home for a quick jog. While the coroner’s official autopsy report is still pending, obvious signs indicate that she was brutally beaten and raped. Here’s what we know so far about her murder:
1Her Father Found the 30-Year-Old’s Body
30-year-old Karina Vetrano was found brutally murder near a jogging path at Howard Beach in Queens, New York after going out jogging alone on August 2. Her father Phillip was present at the crime scene when his daughter’s body was discovered after he had reported her missing when she didn’t return from her daily evening jog.
He phoned a local police chief he knew personally and a search would soon begin. After calling the police, her father led them down the jogging route his daughter would frequent in hopes of finding clues to her whereabouts. After hours of searching with the police, Phillip Vetrano stumbled across Karina’s phone and starting to run down the path where he eventually found her body lying face down amongst tall grass in a marshy area.
2Police Have No Leads Towards Finding Her Murderer Who Strangled Her to Death, and Sexual Assault Has Not Been Ruled Out Either
The NYPD have already been requesting any sort of information that can help lead to clues of the murderer, who has yet to be found. Chief spokesmen for NYPD Stephen Davis explained in a media briefing that there were signs of sexual assault, although thankfully he did not go into details of the gruesome crime. He explained ‘The [medical examiner] needs to confirm that, but there were marks on the body that were consistent with sexual assault’.
It is believed that her jogging shorts and bra were pulled down when her body was discovered. The autopsy found that she had died from asphyxiation, confirming that she had been strangled to death. Police have yet to find any suspects or leads, and no arrests have been made as of yet.
3DNA Has Been Successfully Recovered from The Crime Scene
While there appears to be no suspects or leads at the moment, the successful recovery of DNA from the crime scene could prove vital in finding Vetrano’s murderer. Despite this, there has be no matches to the DNA so far as the search for more information continues. Police had tested various items for DNA and fingerprints in hopes of finding clues to who her killer could be, as many of her belongings had been thrown away during the attack.
4She Would Normally Go Jogging with Her Father, But He Stayed at Home on the Day She Was Murdered Due to Back Ache
Karina Vetrano and her father Phillip were very close. On his 60th birthday, she wrote on her blog,
“Happy 60th Birthday To My Hero. I’m So Blessed To Have a Father I Can Call My Best Friend,”.
Karina and her father would frequently go jogging together down the various bike and bike paths near her home in Howard Beach, Queens. As a retired firefighter Phillip was in very good shape, and shared a passion for fitness with his daughter.
On the day of her murder, Phillip could not join her on one of their usual jogs as he was suffering from back ache, although he had asked her not to run there without him as it had a reputation for being a rough area.
