Buenos Aires, Argentina — Olivia Sievers, a flight attendant from Germany, makes regular visits to Buenos Aires. It’s part of her normal stop working an international route for a major airline in her home country.
One day while she was outside her hotel, she came upon a street dog. Nothing unusual as street dogs are a common sight in South America. There are estimated to be 2.5 million dogs living in the streets in neighboring Chile alone (but we’ll leave that part for another story).
Olivia showed this dog a little love by giving him some food and playing with him, and it looks like he was immediately smitten by her kindness. This is probably something that he rarely experienced being a street dog and forced to fend for himself day-by-day just to survive.
The dog began to follow her around as soon as she would leave the hotel. In an interview with Noticiero Trece, Olivia said:
“I tried to change my way because I didn’t want [him to] follow me back to the hotel, But it was not possible. He always came back and followed me. I tried one hour, but he always watched me and followed me. He was really happy that somebody gave him attention.”
It was normal to see the dog sleeping outside the hotel’s front door — waiting for her. So she named him “Rubio” and gave him an airline blanket to keep him warm at night.
When Olivia eventually flew back to Germany, she wished her little friend goodbye and never thought she would ever see him again. But when she returned weeks later, she was absolutely shocked to find Rubio still waiting for her at the same spot she left him weeks earlier. And in the months that followed, this same scene would replay itself over and over. Rubio would outside the hotel waiting for Olivia to return from Germany.
The hotel manager eventually took Rubio in, and made arrangements with an animal rescue group to have him adopted out. But Rubio escaped, only to return to the same spot in front of the hotel — waiting for Olivia.
Olivia knew then she had to bring Rubio home with her to Germany. She made all the legal arrangements and took him to go see a vet for his checkup. And last week, he was flown to Germany where he saw Olivia waiting for him.
