Washington, DC — Former Secretary of State Colin Powell criticized both presidential nominees in a series of leaked emails, revealing strong negative opinions towards Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.
The hacking was later confirmed by Powell’s spokeswoman Peggy Cifrino who said:
“We have confirmed that the general has been hacked and that these are his emails, We have no other comment at this time.”
Among the content found in the leaked emails was a strong criticism of current Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.
In the emails he says that Trump is “a national disgrace and an international pariah” that led a “racist” birther movement.
Hilary Clinton was also strongly criticized, with Powell saying how “everything [she] touches she kind of screws up with hubris”. He was also outspoken against her attempts to drag him into her controversial email problems.
Powell wrote the emails to former aide Emily Miller, now a journalist, on August 21st, with the documents being leaked this Tuesday, with one referencing the ‘birther’ movement:
“Yup, the whole birther movement was racist. That’s what the 99% believe. When Trump couldn’t keep that up he said he also wanted to see if the certificate noted that he was a Muslim.”
Additionally, Powell wrote:
“As I have said before, ‘What if he was?’ Muslims are born as Americans everyday.”
He is also alleged to have said that Trump “is in the process of destroying himself, no need for Dems to attack him. Paul Ryan is calibrating his position again.”
Not only that, but he mentions the current direction of GOP:
“Or as I said before the 2012 election, ‘There is a level of intolerance in parts of the Republican Party”
Further emails revealed his dislike of Clinton’s handling of the email scandal, criticizing how she defended herself:
“Dumb. She should have done a ‘Full Monty’ at the beginning. … I warned her staff three times over the past two years not to try to connect it to me. I am not sure HRC even knew or understood what was going on in the basement.”
In another email he added:
“HRC could have killed this two years ago by merely telling everyone honestly what she had done and not tie me to it.”
He further laments the fact he had to repeatedly tell Clinton’s “minions” that they were “making a mistake trying to drag me in, yet they still try”.
When interviewed by the FBI regarding the use of her email service, Clinton said to investigators how Powell had advised her on using her personal email account.
Documents released as part of their investigation revealed how Powell told her to “be very careful” about using a BlackBerry for email, as if it were to become public knowledge then those emails could be “official record[s] and subject to the law”.
