Tiziana Cantone Commits Suicide After Revenge Porn Humiliation

Naples, Italy — An outpouring of both anger and grief has swept over Italy after the suicide of a 31-year-old woman due to the public shaming and bullying she received from an online sex video.

Tiziana Cantone, who had made previous attempts on her life, spent many exhausting months trying to get the sex video removed from the internet. Cantone subsequently hung herself at her aunt’s home in Mugnano, Italy.

Her funeral procession was televised live, forcing the country to come to terms with the senseless and tragic end to the young woman’s life.

Cantone took her life close to a year after sending a sex video of herself to some friends, which included an ex-boyfriend.

The video was posted online shortly after and went ‘viral’ on various social media outlets. It would go on to garner close to a million views, becoming popular throughout her native Italy.

She became infamous for the catchphrase that she spoke to her partner in the video, “You’re filming? Bravo”, which was then used mockingly online to bully the woman. The phrase was even printed on t-shirts and other products.

Cantone suffered from constant abuse and scrutiny, with many media outlets reporting on the various aspects of her life, much of which was entirely fabricated. One even claimed that she was an aspiring porn actress, which was far from the truth.

As the humiliation of the incident intensified, Cantone quit her job and moved to Tuscany — hoping to start a new life. She even changed her name in the hopes of avoiding further public scrutiny.

A lengthy court battle would follow, with Cantone being granted the “right to be forgotten” in the ruling. It meant that the video was supposed to be removed from various websites, including Facebook, as well as search engines.

However, the ruling also ordered that she was required to pay €20,000 (about $22,300) in various legal fees. This decision was derided throughout Italian media, with it being viewed as the final insult to months of shaming and embarrassment.

Speaking in a court appearance, Cantone’s mother Maria Teresa said that her daughter was “unable to untangle herself from the events”, according to reports in Italy.

“She had always been a healthy, normal girl,” said Teresa.

“Recently, she had been very unhappy. She suffered from everything she saw and heard, and in particular from the lawsuit, because she believed justice had not been done.”

An investigation regarding her death has been opened, which hopes to establish the degree in which the videos had impacted her mental health.

One of Cantone’s friends spoke of how she was ‘distraught’ by the events.

“I wonder how anyone can be so fierce, how to rage against a girl who has not done anything wrong. I think that they should be ashamed of all those who have filled the web of insults and meanwhile secretly watched the images.”

The tragedy is another example of the ongoing debate surrounding revenge porn videos and the damage they can cause.

Many laws are now being introduced throughout the world to help prevent private sex videos being published online, and this marks another example of the damage that can be caused by such an incident.
