Buenos Aires, Argentina — In Barrio Norte, Buenos Aires, a 100-year-old theater known as the “El Ateneo Grand Splendid” was converted into a stunning bookshop. Originally designed and constructed in 1919 by architects Peró and Torres Armengol, the theater has gone through many phases of adaptive reuse during its lifetime.
It was first converted into a cinema and then in 2000, it was transformed into the El Ateneo Grand Splendid bookshop. In 2008, The Guardian named the El Ateneo Grand Splendid the second most beautiful bookstore in the world and its popularity has since spanned across the globe.
Currently, it is estimated that over 1 million people visit this 21,000 square foot bookshop every year.
